  • United has cut the number of pilots it employs in half since 2000.
  • 66% of United’s domestic flights are currently outsourced to regional carriers which operate smaller aircraft, piloted by crews with less training and experience than United Airlines crews.
  • United has made a concerted effort to outsource its international flying through marketing alliances and agreements. Many of those jobs have been and may continue to be offshored to companies based in the Middle East, which is the fastest growing airline and aviation market in the world.
  • Members of Congress, consumer groups, and government officials have raised concerns about the safety of airline passengers given that United’s Express partners do not traditionally require their pilots to go through the same rigorous training that larger carriers like United require of their pilots. Additionally, pilots and crews at these smaller airlines are generally protected by inferior safety rules and regulations. This was especially obvious following the 2009 accident in Buffalo that killed fifty people. “Training and fatigue” were listed as causal factors of those tragedies.
